From what I've observed (with my also limited experience with weddings), it's acceptable to give engagement gifts right when the engagement happens or several months after the fact.  I just can't imagine that people would have sent you your actual wedding gift four months in advance.  I definitely think you did the right thing by using a regular thank-you note!
